Street Photography Research Polly Braden

The above images are by Polly Braden. I feel a lot of her work emphises the lines and patterns around her also she has a lot of arcutect in and i think this adds to her work and makes her work bold and stricking. She is well reknown documentary photographer exploring the relationship between everyday life, work, leisure and economics. She teaches regularly at The University of Westminster and London College of Communication.

I love these images due to the lines  of buildings, art and reflections of light that make the photos intresting. I thinkthe lines make the photos look tidy and clean.

I have started to move my  photographs in this direction  in the last film i have done. Where i have tryed to incorporate lines and patterns and even reflections as i feel this gives the pictures a more arty look. But i do think i perfer the photos i have done in previous films. I do feel that the few photos i have done like the above photos will seam out of character and look out of place.

My Street Photography

This is a photo i took im Middlesbrough. I loved the reflections behind him from the collum. Also i loved what he was doing. I did have a problem in the developing as im not sure weather it was my negative or not but it has blurred in the corners but i actually love the affect it has made. This was 10 seconds of exposure.

This ais another photo from Middlesbrough I came across these men working and couldnt work out weather they were putting this on or if they were taking it off. I also thought that this would be the perfect oppitunity for street photography and im so pleased with the outcome of it. Again it is lurred but i think it has something to do with the negaitive but im liking the affect again. The little tunnel i was in was very dark so to develop this photo i had closed the appature by 3 3 clicks and 2.3 seconds of light exposure.
This Photo was taking in the flea market in Stockton on a very cloudy day but lately when isnt cloudy. I decided to stand on the both ends of the alley and took this shot at the back of the market and caught these 2 ladys. I really like the lady facing front ways as she looks so grumpy and she looks so close to the other lady they they look liked they knocked into each other. This photo took 8 seconds exposure.
This is again stockton flea market at the top end of the alley and i waited for the man to walk into shot so it didnt look so empty. the exposure on this was 8 seconds.
This is a double exposure after i had a slight problem with my film and its of silver street in stockton, and was something that i wanted to see what it looked like. I must admit i do like it but wouldnt say its the best photo i have done. This was only exposed for 5 seconds and could do with being darker yto get a bit more contrast in.

Street Photography Research.....Mid thought at direction

Ive had a few days off doing the street photography and had time to think about the type of photos im doing. I still have this feeling and pull towards the more dark and dangerous part of street photography. I wanted to capture the wrong side of socity you could say, and really felt this was the direction i wanted to go in. But the more im developing the films i have took and im idelly looking through the wonderous images i have shot with the 35mm camera the more i see the world that  i see...beautiful busy people just getting on with there lives. I never thought i would be able to put these thoughts i have on people on to film but here i am on my 4 th film and am still shocked at myself to find the types of photos i have took. Which shows individuals being vunrable and kind even when ive went to take the scarey they have come out looking tottaly different and i like that my photos are showing this as the worlds not such a bad place after all

My Street Photography Photos

Well ive been back in the dark room today developing some more photos. It does feel like this is now a guilty pleasure and I cant get enough of developing my photos. I get very excited  when I put it in that developing fluid and watch the picture come in and thinking to myself  "oh yeah I did that". Theres nothing better than seeing the shot you took and praying that you managed to keep it in focus .....and low and behold it is in focus. It puts a great big Cheshire cat grin on my face.

The Photo above is mine. This was my attempt at bringing humour to street photography.  When I saw the sign and the 2 lady's beneath it. It was to much of a great photo to pass up. Even though I was in a well known store taking this photo I must of looked so dodgy looking through the rails of clothes before I dared myself to quickly take the photo and run out the store. I must admit im really happy with it. It took me several attempts to lighten this photo up and in the end I managed to expose this for 7 seconds.

The Photo above is my image. This man actually stopped me and asked if I wanted to take his photo and actually wanted to pose with a Lobster and when he realised he didn't have any left he decided to pose with a big fish instead. This photo was difficult to develop because the boxes at the front of his table where white and the more I exposed it to light the darker the background got and the more the front seamed to get a darker. So I exposed all the photo to 15 seconds then got a piece of card and covered the back of his stall and exposed the bottom of the table with the white boxes for another 10 seconds and wiggled the card about so I didn't get a definite line.

Again the above photo belongs to me. This gentleman was collecting for a charity and he agreed to let me take his photo im really glad he didn't smile as I wanted him how he was looking when I saw him and I think the tickets blowing in the wind makes this photo. I only exposed this photo to 5 seconds of light but I think it might need more contrast so I may try it again with the aperture closed by 2 click shut and exposing it to more light.

The image above is also mine. This gentleman I past a few times sat at his market stall and when I past him looking like this  I took a super sonic click of the camera. I loved the way he put his head in his hands. Again this photo was  5 seconds exposure but I decided to close the aperture by 2 clicks and extend the exposure to 10 seconds im happy with how it turned out, but when you look at it closely its blurred so I will have another attempt at this picture.

Street Photography Research

So ive been out a couple of days doing my Street Photography now, and as much as I wanted to bring the light hearted into my pictures I have found myself trying to find a serious and even scary side to this street photography. Which for me is strange as im basically a.......wimp. So to find myself looking for the rough and dodgy looking people to take photos of is out of character, I hate anything that could lead to confrontations. I have found myself in several positions to take such a photo and found the situation to tense for me to proceed. As I would defiantly of been seen to have took......erm this piece of evidence, and I don't think it would of ended in a polite conversation. I find these type of photos fascinating as I know these types of people can leave us feeling rather intimidated and its for that reason I think they make a good subject for street photography. But if I am ever brave enough to take the photograph if the opportunity ever arises again  is better left unsaid as im still decideding weather id be brave or stupid. But judging by my desire to capture such things on film im gonna say stupid.
The above Photo is by Matt Webber in the streets of new York.

I would only be brave enough to take a picture like this if I was sure I was not going to be seen but I would very much kick my own A**e if I missed a photo like this.
The above photo is by Bruce Davidson. Now this is a very strong and frightening photo and must have been scary to witness. I would not have took this photo at all I would have been cowering in the corner putting myself in my happy place. But im very glad that someone was brave enough to take this picture and again a situation if you are doing street photography would have been perfect.....obviously not for the poor fellow who has the gun to his head.
The above photo is by Zack Arias. This photo to me looks staged  and I would of totally been comfortable doing this type of photo because incase you have forgotten im a wimp. But this type of photo does not to me represent real street photography and I would want some thing real.

So inlight of what I am trying to achieve you don't get anywhere unless you are willing to challenge yourself . So I will continue to look for situations to take photos of......but not to dangerous.

Street Photography

Well Today was my first time Developing my Pictures I took at Stockton market. I loved every minute of it, I managed to develop 3 photos but only 1 had dried in time for me going home. This Photo im very proud of. I took it on Wednesday the 25th September and it was a very split second photo I was walking past when I saw him and I had my camera on me and took his picture. I developed it for 15 seconds and like I said im very pleased with how the picture has come out as I was wanting some strong images.

Gulity consciences

I was finished my 4th roll of film of today for my street photography and decided to take a photo of a man playing a guitar, I took his photo then dropped my money in a tin on the floor near his feet and walked off. I finished the last photo put the camera away and decided to do some shopping as I was coming out of the shop the man who was playing  the guitar started shouting at me " Hey you!! why did you take my photo?? ive done nothing wrong I have nothing to hide so why are you taking my photo?" I then kindly explained why I took his photo and that I didn't want to interrupt his singing to tell him why I had done it, he then went on to explain why he has nothing to hide and I can check up on him if I like. which I backed away slowly saying that's ok it for college............That's the 2nd time ive been pulled up from people thinking I work for the Income Support.

Scarey People do not make good photos

Today I went to Middlesbrough hoping to get some good street photography pictures saying Middlesbrough is full of up to no goods if you catch my meaning. Soon as I got into Middlesbrough town center I straight away saw a man selling big issues near MacDonald's he had tattoos all over his face and looked rather..... interesting on a street photography level. As I was about to dig in my purse to buy a big issue from him and ask if I could take his photo, he went into some mad rant to himself saying " what the F**ks  wrong with all you people, yeah what the F**k are you looking at you w***er" I decided against taking his photo. Next I was stood next to cash generator as I thought I would get some good......er characters coming in and out of there. As a man approached the shop door way he was mumbling to him self and saying F**king smack heads they get on my f**king nerves",Again decided this may not be the best place to take photos. As I was walking round trying to find a something I thought would be good for this project I noticed a lot of people had there faces curled up like an angry Popeye at me. I was rapidly thinking this may of been a bad idea. After a while of me taking photos of old lady's on benches feeding pidgins (this was much safer) I saw a group of men huddled round a big issue seller near waterstones with them little stocky dogs they all walk round with. I decided to chance taking a photo so as I focused my camera and snapped a shot, one of them saw me and gave me that look like an angry Popeye. I then immediately  pretended my camera was broke and tried to look like I was trying to fix it then walked off quickly. I came back round a little later and while I was waiting for my hubby (body guard) to get himself  a sausage roll, a man popped his head round the corner of a wall, this was to much of a good photo to pass up so I swallowed hard and lifted my camera just then the big issue man come running past me to the man and handed a little bag of white stuff. Needless to say im glad I didn't take his photo now.
